Japan's Zeon was the first company in the world to build a COC plant, beginning construction in January 1990 with an initial capacity of several thousand tons. The company launched its first product in 1998. Polyplastics entered the COC/COP market through its acquisition of the Topas business of Germany's Hoechst Group. Mitsui Chemicals began production of its Apel series of COC products in 1995, while Japan Synthetic Rubber began mass production of COC polymers at its Chiba plant in 1997. Currently, the combined COC/COP production capacity of several major manufacturers is approximately 80,000-100,000 tons/year, with Zeon and Polyplastics holding the lion's share.
