Description

REPORT HIGHLIGHT

STATCOM UPS Market size was valued at US$ 65.5 Million in 2024, expanding at a CAGR of 8.5% from 2025 to 2032.
The STATCOM UPS market is gaining attention as more industries need both reliable backup power and better control over power quality. A STATCOM UPS (Static Synchronous Compensator UPS) basically combines a traditional UPS with a STATCOM, so it not only keeps critical equipment running during power disturbances, but also helps stabilize voltage, improve power factor, and reduce issues like flicker and harmonics on the electrical network. This type of solution is becoming more relevant because modern electrical systems are getting more complex and more sensitive. Sectors like data centers, semiconductor manufacturing, hospitals, and highly automated factories depend on stable, clean power and cannot afford even short interruptions or voltage drops. At the same time, the growing use of renewable energy sources like solar and wind makes the grid more variable, especially at the distribution level. STATCOM UPS systems help deal with both problems at once by providing ride‑through support for critical loads and actively managing reactive power and voltage in real time.

STATCOM UPS Market- Market Dynamics

Rising Grid Instability and Stricter Power Quality Needs in Data Centers and Industry
One of the main drivers for the STATCOM UPS Market is the growing mismatch between how stable users need the power supply to be and how unstable many grids are becoming, especially with more renewables coming online. Global electricity demand is expected to grow by around 3% per year through 2025–2030, and at the same time the share of variable renewable energy (mainly wind and solar) is climbing fast already above 30% of total generation in the EU and above 25% in several major countries. This is good for decarbonization but it also makes voltage fluctuations, reactive power problems, and short‑term disturbances more common, particularly on weaker grids and at the ends of long transmission lines. On the consumption side, the global data center sector is expanding quickly: data centers are estimated to use around 200–300 TWh of electricity per year (roughly 1–1.5% of global power demand), and hyperscale capacity is growing at high single‑ to low double‑digit CAGRs. Tier III and Tier IV data centers typically target uptime levels of 99.982–99.995%, which works out to just a few minutes of allowable downtime per year, and they also require very tight power quality (for example, voltage within ±5%, low harmonic distortion, and near‑unity power factor). Similar issues appear in critical industrial segments like semiconductor manufacturing, petrochemicals, metals, cement, and large automated plants, where even a short voltage sag or a brief interruption can shut down production lines and cause losses in the hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. STATCOM‑based UPS systems are attractive in this context because they combine fast dynamic reactive power compensation (voltage support, flicker mitigation, power factor correction) with ride‑through and backup capability in a single system, with response times on the order of milliseconds and the ability to handle rapidly changing loads. The global STATCOM market is often valued in the low‑ to mid‑billion‑dollar range and is projected to grow around 7–10% per year, while the broader UPS market is usually expected to grow at about 6–8% CAGR. As grid codes tighten, renewable penetration increases, and the number of mission‑critical facilities (data centers, hospitals, industrial plants, airports, etc.) keeps rising worldwide, demand for combined STATCOM UPS solutions is expected to grow in parallel.

STATCOM UPS Market- Segmentation Analysis:

The Global STATCOM UPS Market is segmented by product type, capacity, application, end user, and region.
By product type, static UPS systems are the most widely used in day‑to‑day environments. Globally, the overall UPS market (all types) is often valued in the USD 10–15 billion range, with static UPS accounting for the bulk of units shipped because they are compact, relatively easy to install, and simpler to maintain than large rotating (dynamic) systems. These static units are heavily used in offices, small and mid‑size data rooms, commercial buildings, and smaller industrial or healthcare sites. In many countries, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) make up over 90% of all businesses, and most of their backup needs fall into the static UPS category, which helps explain why this type has such a broad installed base compared with more complex dynamic or hybrid systems that are usually reserved for very large or highly specialized facilities.
Capacity‑wise, the 10 kVA to 100 kVA range covers a huge number of medium‑sized applications and tends to see the highest deployment volume. This band is ideal for small server rooms, telecom base stations, branch offices, small hospitals and clinics, and mid‑sized manufacturing lines. For context, there are hundreds of thousands of telecom towers and base transceiver stations worldwide India alone has over 700,000 telecom towers and a large portion of these sites, plus similar facilities in other countries, typically use UPS units in the tens of kVA range. Likewise, the number of small data rooms and on‑premise IT closets in corporate buildings, banks, and public institutions far exceeds the number of hyperscale data centers, so demand naturally clusters around this medium power segment rather than very small home systems (<10 kVA) or very large industrial installations (>500 kVA).
By application, data centers stand out as one of the most critical and power‑sensitive segments for STATCOM and advanced UPS solutions. Global data center electricity consumption is estimated at roughly 200–300 TWh per year (about 1–1.5% of worldwide electricity use), and the number of data centers, especially colocation and hyperscale sites, has been growing at high single‑ to low double‑digit rates. Tier III and Tier IV facilities usually target uptime levels of 99.982–99.995%, which translates to only a few minutes of allowable downtime per year. Even short power disturbances can cause outages, hardware damage, or data loss, so operators invest heavily in redundant power architectures, including multiple UPS layers and, increasingly, systems that can also correct voltage sags, harmonics, and power factor issues. As more services move to the cloud and edge computing expands, the total floor space and IT load in data centers worldwide is expected to keep rising, which in turn drives continuous demand for higher‑capacity, high‑reliability UPS and power‑conditioning solutions.
Looking at end users, the IT and telecom sector is one of the largest buyers of UPS capacity globally. The information and communications technology (ICT) industry underpins internet services, mobile networks, cloud platforms, and enterprise IT, all of which need 24/7 power availability. The number of internet users has surpassed 5 billion worldwide, and mobile subscriptions are well above 8 billion, which translates into vast networks of data centers, switching centers, and base stations that cannot afford downtime. Telecom operators often manage tens or hundreds of thousands of power‑sensitive sites each, and cloud providers run hyperscale campuses with IT loads measured in tens of megawatts. Because even a brief power interruption can lead to dropped calls, service outages, or SLA penalties, IT and telecom companies allocate a significant share of their infrastructure budgets to UPS systems and associated power‑quality equipment, making them a core demand segment within the STATCOM UPS market.

STATCOM UPS Market- Geographical Insights

From a geographical point of view, the STATCOM UPS market is most relevant in regions that have a lot of power‑sensitive facilities and, at the same time, growing issues with grid stability mainly North America, Europe, and Asia‑Pacific. North America, especially the U.S., has a huge base of data centers, telecom hubs, and industrial plants. The U.S. alone is estimated to host well over 2,000 larger data centers and roughly 35–40% of the world’s hyperscale sites, all of which need extremely stable power. Europe accounts for around 20–25% of global data center capacity and is rapidly increasing its share of wind and solar, which already provide more than 30% of EU electricity. This rising renewables penetration makes voltage regulation and power quality more challenging, which in turn raises interest in advanced UPS and STATCOM‑type systems at the customer side. Asia‑Pacific is the fastest‑growing region overall: it consumes more than 50% of global electricity, and countries like China and India are adding large numbers of data centers, 5G base stations, and heavy industrial loads. Global electricity demand is expected to grow by about 3% per year this decade, and as more grids lean on variable renewables while mission‑critical loads keep multiplying, regions with big industrial and digital footprints naturally become hotspots for STATCOM‑capable UPS solutions.

STATCOM UPS Market- Country Insights

The United States is one of the most important single markets for STATCOM UPS because it combines a massive base of sensitive loads with an aging and sometimes fragile grid. The U.S. has more than 280 million electricity customers and a very large high tech and service economy data centers, cloud providers, semiconductor fabs, banks, hospitals, and large manufacturers all operate facilities that can’t tolerate poor power quality. U.S. data centers alone are estimated to use around 70–100 TWh of electricity per year, and the country hosts roughly 35–40% of all hyperscale data centers worldwide. At the same time, various studies from the U.S. Department of Energy and industry groups suggest that power outages and power quality disturbances cost American businesses tens of billions of dollars annually. In some process industries, a single serious voltage sag or short interruption can shut down production for hours and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Because of this, U.S. operators tend to invest heavily in UPS architectures, and there is growing interest in systems that don’t just provide backup, but also deliver STATCOM like functions such as fast reactive power compensation, voltage stabilization, and harmonic filtering. As the share of renewables in the U.S. generation mix (already above 20% and rising) continues to grow, and as more energy intensive digital infrastructure AI data centers, 5G networks, EV manufacturing comes online, the case for advanced STATCOM UPS solutions is getting stronger.

STATCOM UPS Market- Competitive Landscape:

The competitive landscape for STATCOM UPS solutions sits at the intersection of the traditional UPS market and the high end power electronics/FACTS space. Big electrical and industrial players like ABB, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Mitsubishi Electric, Hitachi Energy, and Eaton are all important here, since they already supply both utility scale STATCOM systems and large UPS units for data centers and industry. The global UPS market overall is often estimated at around USD 10–15 billion with expected growth of about 6–8% per year, and these companies hold significant shares in medium and high power segments. They compete and sometimes overlap with more IT focused vendors such as Vertiv, Huawei Digital Power, and Delta Electronics, which are strong in data center UPS and are gradually adding more advanced grid support features. On the pure STATCOM side, the global market is usually sized in the low to mid billion dollar range, with growth rates in the 7–10% range, driven mostly by renewable integration and stricter grid codes. As customers especially large data centers, semiconductor fabs, and heavy industry start asking for combined solutions that can both clean up power quality and provide ride through or backup, vendors are trying to differentiate through faster response times (on the order of milliseconds), high efficiency (often 96–99%), modular designs that scale to hundreds of kVA or MVA, and advanced monitoring/analytics platforms. This convergence between classic UPS and STATCOM style power electronics is turning the STATCOM UPS niche into a strategic focus area for many of the big electrification and critical power companies.

Recent Developments:

In August 2024, GE Grid Solutions introduced FACTSFLEX GFMe, a new generation STATCOM system that actually goes a step beyond traditional reactive‑only devices by adding supercapacitor‑based energy storage. This lets it provide both reactive and active power support, which is especially useful in grids with weak infrastructure or a high share of renewables. GFMe can offer virtual inertia and grid‑forming capabilities, and its modular, scalable design allows it to respond very quickly to voltage and frequency disturbances. It’s available globally and sits alongside GE Vernova’s existing FACTSFLEX Classic and FACTSFLEX GFM models as part of a broader STATCOM product family
In May 2024, GE Vernova also announced a partnership with TECO Electric & Machinery Co. to deploy ±200 Mvar STATCOM systems at important substations in Changhua County, Taiwan. In this project, GE Vernova is supplying the STATCOM and transformer technology, while TECO is responsible for the civil works and on‑site activities. The main goal is to stabilize voltage and help the local grid handle large amounts of solar and wind power, since Changhua is a key region for both industry and renewable energy in Taiwan. The project ties in with Taiwan’s national sustainability and energy transition targets and highlights how STATCOM technology is being used to support higher renewable penetration.
In July 2023, TECO Electric & Machinery Co., Ltd. announced that it had signed a contract worth about USD 149.6 million with Taipower for a STATCOM engineering project in Changhua County. The project includes the construction of a step-up substation and a 161 kV STATCOM system with a total capacity of 400 MVAR, which is roughly half of Taipower’s total planned STATCOM capacity. The work is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2027.
