Description

An optical isolator, or optical diode, is an optical component which allows the transmission of light in only one direction. It is typically used to prevent unwanted feedback into an optical oscillator, such as a laser cavity. The operation of the devices depends on the Faraday Effect (which in turn is produced by magneto-optic effect), which is used in the main component, the Faraday rotator.

In electronics, an opto-isolator, also called an optocoupler, photocoupler, or optical isolator, is a component that transfers electrical signals between two isolated circuits by using light. Opto-isolators prevent high voltages from affecting the system receiving the signal.[2] Commercially available opto-isolators withstand input-to-output voltages up to 10 kV[3] and voltage transients with speeds up to 10 kV/μs.

A common type of opto-isolator consists of an LED and a phototransistor in the same opaque package. Other types of source-sensor combinations include LED-photodiode, LED-LASCR, and lamp-photoresistor pairs. Usually opto-isolators transfer digital (on-off) signals, but some techniques allow them to be used with analog signals.

In consumption market, the growth rate of global consumption is smooth relatively. The world's largest sales of the first three regions are North America, China, and Japan with the share respectively were 41%, 14% and 12%.

Optical Isolators can be classified as two types by its performance, such as polarization dependent optical isolator and polarization independent optical isolator. The share of these two types is respectively 81% and 18%. It is mainly used in the telecom industry and almost account for 46% in the application field.
