Metallic chelates are a complex of a metal ion bound to an organic molecule (ligand).

Metal ions are important minerals for plants. They are required by plants in small amounts, and therefore are being refered to as ‘Micronutrients. Their deficiencies result in yellowing of leaves, retarded growth and general low quality crops.

Chelated compounds are more stable than non-chelated compounds. Therefore, metallic chelates are widely used in agriculture as micronutrient fertilizers to supply plants with Iron, Manganese, Zinc and Copper. The most common chelates used in agriculture are EDTA, DTPA and EDDHA.

The global market is dominated by few players from Europe and US, key players include Nouryon, BASF, Valagro, Dow, Van Iperen International, and ADOB, etc. Global top five players hold a share over 50 percent.

In terms of product type, EDTA chelates is the largest segment, with a share over 51 %; and in terms of by crop type, Fruits & Vegetables is the largest crop type, with a share about 55 percent. And according to the application method, fertigation is the largest, while foliar sprays grew at the fastest pace in past few years.
