A labrum tear can occur as a result of repeated stress or when the shoulder attempts to dislocate. A tear or stretch of the labrum leads to shoulder instability or looseness of the joint. In a labral repair procedure, the torn tissue is fixed with a combination of sutures and anchors, often referred to as glenoid anchors. These devices are sold at essentially the same cost as those in rotator cuff repair, but are manufactured for specific use in the labrum.

A Bankart lesion is a tear of the labrum at the inferior glenohumeral ligament. It results from chronic dislocation and is often accompanied by a Hill-Sachs lesion, which is a compression fracture of the humeral head. A common lesion in this region of the body is the SLAP lesion, or superior labrum tear in an anterior to posterior direction. These types of injuries arise from overhead and throwing type activities and frequently necessitate surgical intervention.

All-sutures are the newest segment of the shoulder labrum suture anchor market. Many companies have entered the market to try and capitalize on its growing popularity, with Arthrex being the latest large entrant with their FiberTak™ product.

The labrum is a ring of cartilage that circles the end of the shoulder blade (the glenoid). This stabilizes the shoulder joint and allows for a wide range of movement. A common type of labral tear is the SLAP lesion, which is an acronym for “superior labral anterior to posterior.”
