Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are manufactured from either polyurethane or silicone.Silicone rubber (silastic) catheters are softer and more flexible than polyurethane, making them morecomfortable for patients; however, recent improvements to polyurethane have increased its softnessand flexibility. In addition, silicone catheters tend to have lower tensile strength and are not as durableas polyurethane catheters. As a result, silicone PICCs often have thicker walls and lower flow rates thanpolyurethane catheters of a similar size. They are also more difficult to manufacture because of thephysical and chemical properties of silicone. In 2015, Silicone PICCs represented roughly 5% of total PICCunit sales. Silicone PICCs were most frequently used in alternate care settings and are most commonlyplaced in pediatric and neonatal patients.
