The growth of the ophthalmic ultrasound market will be driven by the increasing prevalence of

age-related ocular conditions, such as glaucoma and cataracts. In addition, as the economy recovers, elective procedures such as refractive surgeries may become more commonplace, placing additional demand on ophthalmic ultrasound systems. In Europe, ultrasound procedures are generally reimbursed, making these machines a good investment for eye care practices. A/B-Scan ultrasound units are a large part of the ophthalmic ultrasound market because they are appealing to eye care practitioners who want to purchase ophthalmic ultrasound units, but do not have enough space to house both an A-Scan and B-Scan unit. UBMs provide a high-resolution cross-sectional image of the cornea. Optical coherence tomographers (OCTs) are a competing technology that can also image intraocular structures. Because OCTs and UBMs are both expensive, physicians may choose to only purchase one of the two. OCTs have the distinct advantage of providing micron-level resolution for eye structures; however, they are more costly. Due to this competition from OCTs, UBMs are one of only two ophthalmic ultrasound markets that are declining.

Ophthalmic ultrasound is a non-invasive technique to image ocular structures. Because ophthalmic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves, it has advantages over light microscopy, including the ability to detect anomalies that cannot be identified by visual examination such as those affecting opaque tissues and regions within the eye. The applications for ophthalmic ultrasonography include the detection of glaucoma, infections, eye trauma and for calculating the power of the intraocular lens (IOL) required in cataract surgery. Ultrasonography is also used for aiding physicians with the placement of instruments during surgery.
