Growth in the mid-single digits will be seen in the neurological microscope market over the forecast period. This market includes new expansion business and replacement sales, but does not include refurbished business. Growth will be driven by low growth in both unit sales and ASP. The neurosurgical microscope market is a mature market and the vast majority of units sold are intended to be replacements for existing systems. Though microscopes have a limited lifespan, most of the time they are purchased due to technological advancements before needing to be replaced. However, there is still low growth for units sold. There has been some competition from neuroendoscopes as they become more frequently used in neurosurgery but for now the surgical microscope remains the most frequently used optical tool in neurosurgery with the endoscope primarily used for assistance with certain procedures.

Optical microscopy is an increasingly technical field in which light from an area of interest is passed through lenses to provide a magnified view. Neurosurgical microscopes have many requirements such as extreme precision, outstanding color conformity, high resolution image quality, efficient light transmission, exceptional detail within the field of view and ergonomic use, all of which increase surgical accuracy and decrease physician fatigue. Leica has produced a 3D heads-up system which saves surgeons from having to look through the oculars of the microscope for long portions of the day.
