The European PICC market includes conventional PICCs and power-injectable PICCs. There is a trend towards increasing use of power-injectable PICCs as these devices become more affordable. The PICC markets across Europe are relatively new when compared to other catheter markets such as implantable ports, central venous catheters (CVCs) and peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs). Growth seen in the PICC market is a result of PICCs partially cannibalizing procedures from ports, CVCs and PIVCs as well as new indication for PICCs. The Italian PICC market is particularly well developed. Despite having a lower population than the Germany, France and the U.K., Italy represented the second largest PICC market in Europe in 2016, in terms of units sold and market value. The high utilization of PICCs in Italy is attributed to the success of training programs teaching nurses to insert PICCs and the creation of nursing teams specializing in PICC insertion. This comes in contrast to other European markets where PICC insertion is performed largely by physicians. C. R. Bard has played a key role in developing the Italian PICC market.

Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are introduced through the basilic, cephalic or median cubital veins in the arm, and the tip of the catheter is then directed to the superior vena cava (SVC). PICCs have a wide range of applications and are commonly used for delivering chemotherapy and antibiotics, and for drawing blood. Generally, the devices are used for one week to three months but can range in use from a few days to over a year. This flexibility sets PICCs apart from other vascular access catheters and contributes to the increased use of PICCs in general. The most frequent indwelling time for a PICC is three weeks. Although the number of PICC procedures is relatively small compared with those involving central venous catheters (CVCs), PICCs are taking market share away from other catheter types. This is due to the fact that PICCs are associated with a lower infection rate in comparison to CVCs.
