The total market for erectile dysfunction treatment devices includes inflatable erectile dysfunction devices and malleable erectile dysfunction devices. Growth in this market is tied to the overwhelming popularity of inflatable devices, which represent over 98% of the total penile implant market. Sales of inflatable devices are driven by the popularity of the three-piece implant; this is due mainly to its superior clinical quality in comparison to the two-piece inflatable alternative. Malleable devices are the least expensive penile implant device with the simplest design and operative procedure, making them the most suitable for patients with limited dexterity.

For an erection to occur, blood flows into the penis, which causes it to expand and stiffen; this is sparked by impulses from the brain to the genital nerves. Erectile dysfunction (ED) can be caused when these impulses are blocked, or the flow of blood to the penis is restricted. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, kidney disease and multiple sclerosis can be common underlying causes. Certain medications, psychological factors and injuries can also be factors leading to ED.
