The European market for dialysis catheters comprises the acute hemodialysis, chronic hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis catheter segments. The chronic hemodialysis catheter market is segmented by catheter type yielding two segments: the conventional chronic hemodialysis catheter segment and the antimicrobial chronic hemodialysis catheter segment. This market is being driven by growth in the chronic hemodialysis catheter and peritoneal dialysis catheter segments. Contraction in the acute hemodialysis segment market is limiting growth of the total market. The size of the patient pool for dialysis devices is expected to increase as the number of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) rises; however, the growth will be moderated as alternatives such as fistulae make up a larger percentage of the total patients. Price growth will be relatively stable, with a slight decline over the forecast period. Competition will balance the increased growth from premium-priced chronic dialysis catheters. In addition, new technologies, such as high flow and antimicrobial catheters, are expected to somewhat counteract price erosion in the dialysis catheter market.

Dialysis catheters are used for facilitating dialysis for patients whose kidneys are unable to properly filter water and waste. Most patients treated with dialysis have been diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD); however, patients suffering from acute kidney failure can also receive dialysis. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a test used to assess kidney function. In turn, patients with chronically low GFRs are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD). When the GFR drops below the threshold, which is when kidney activity is less than 10% of normal levels, patients are considered to have progressed to Stage 5 CKD or ESRD. Patients with ESRD require a kidney transplant or dialysis. However, many ESRD patients are not suitable candidates for kidney transplants.
