Europe Market Report for Dental Barrier Membranes 2017 - MedCore

Barrier membranes are a critical component to regeneration therapy and are aimed at restoring the form and function of the mouth. Commercially available on the market, barrier membranes function in dental surgeries to help retain bone grafting materials, to exclude epithelium and connective tissue from entering into sites of desired bone and ligament regeneration, or for the combination of these reasons. Whether restoring lost bone around teeth or implants, or in larger areas of the jaws affected by trauma or disease, too often there is inadequate gingival tissue to cover the membranes, leading to membrane exposure, extensive membrane contamination and procedural failure, which is unacceptable.

Research in terms of guided bone regeneration (GBR) is evidenced based on clinical trials. Dental barrier membranes on the market fulfill design criteria relevant for GBR. Both resorbable and non-resorbable membranes are available on the European market. The market for barrier membranes is benefiting from increased consumer awareness and knowledge on the proven benefits of its use in regenerative procedures. Resorbable membranes offer the advantage of being resorbed by the body and thus eliminate the necessity of a second-stage surgery for removal. For this reason, resorbable membranes appeal to both the dental clinician and patient as it reduces the risk of morbidity, tissue damage and time required to complete each procedure. These benefits can be attributed to the transition from non-resorbable to resorbable membranes. In 2016, resorbable membranes represented approximately 95% of the total volume of barrier membranes sold across Europe.
