As of 2015, there have been three such products offered on the market in Australia: BMP-2-based INFUSE® by Medtronic, Olympus’s BMP-7-based OP-1® distributed by Stryker and Wright’s β-TCP and rhPDGF-BB based Augment®. BMPs were first discovered by Marshall Urist in 1965. Since the discovery, there have been 20 regulatory protein molecules identified to date. BMPs specifically regulate the production of bone within the human body. These proteins are functionally relevant during embryonic development in the formation of the skeleton. Urist established that demineralized bone matrix, when implanted in ectopic sites in rodents, helped to induce bone regeneration. Urist discovered that a single dose of BMP combined with autograft can repair non-union fractures that are 3 cm to 14 cm in size. BMPs are involved in many signaling pathways including those that cause increases in parathyroid hormone levels and the expression of osteocalcin, which stimulates osteoblast differentiation. These groundbreaking findings led to the isolation and cloning of several BMPs, which have been exploited for their healing properties.

Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) is one of the first growth factors characterized and one of the most thoroughly studied molecules in the field of medicine. It is supported by a large base of scientific literature.
