The market for anesthesia disposables includes a variety of consumables used at various stages of anesthesia administration. Specifically, anesthesia circuits, anesthesia masks, sample lines, filters/HMEs, breathing bag, endotracheal tubes, and laryngeal masks are covered. The majorities of the markets are stagnant and mature, growing only with increased volume of surgical procedures. However, pricing competition due to the competitive nature of established disposables in general has largely limited overall market growth for most disposable segments. Rising oil prices are also having a direct effect on the market, both because the products are made petroleum-derived materials and because of high-volume shipping costs. Laryngeal masks, as a relatively new device, are still being adopted in some health care environments and the market for these products is expected to grow faster than the others.
The four types of anesthesia disposables covered in this study are anesthesia circuits (sometimes referred to as breathing circuits), anesthesia masks, endotracheal tubes (ETTs) and laryngeal masks (LMs). Laryngeal masks are sometimes referred to as laryngeal mask airways, or LMAs, but this is a misnomer, as LMAs are the brand of LMs offered by LMA Incorporated. Disposable and reusable forms LMs are covered in this analysis.
