Wichita City Council (WCC) is planning to undertake the construction of a Wichita downtown ball park in Kansa, the US.
The project involves the construction of a new stadium or renovation of the existing one. However, the plans are yet to be finalized.
If WCC opts new stadium plans then the project includes the construction of a new stadium, National Baseball Congress museum, a pedestrian bridge, retail shops, restaurants, parking facilities and the installation of related infrastructure with the cost of US$40 million to US$60 million.
On May 2, 2017, WCC approved a sales tax bond district to fund about half (US$20 million) of the project cost.
Out of total project cost (US$60 million) around US$40 million funds will be generated through Sales Tax Revenue (STAR) Bonds, a finance mechanism in which the city will borrow against future sales taxes to be generated by businesses in the project area.
If WCC opts for the renovation of the stadium then the project will involve the following improvements with the investment value of US$29.5 million.
1. Stadium improvements cost US$12.5 million.
2. Parking development cost US$9 million.
3. Street improvements cost US$4.5 million.
4. Contingency funds US$1.5 million.
5. Greenway and path cost US$1 million.
6. Financing costs US$1 million.
On July 18, 2017, Delano business district, the City Council approved a project plan for spending US$29.5 million, where as US$20 million will be financed by borrowing against future property taxes.
Planning activities are underway and the timelines for the project has yet to be finalized. However, WCC is still working on finalizing the plans whether to renovate the current stadium or to build the new one.
