Western Australia Biomass Pty Ltd (WAB) is planning to undertake the Manjimup Biomass Power Plant project in South Western Australia, Australia.
The project involves the construction of a 40MW biomass power plant. It will include the construction of a substation, storage tanks, ash collector units and related infrastructure, the installation of steam turbines and generators, and the laying of transmission lines.
In 2009, the project proposal has been approved by the then WA environment minister, with one of the conditions being for construction to start within five years, but the deadline lapsed in early 2014.
Aurecon has been appointed as the consultant. Aurecon’s services for the plant includes addressing key environmental factors, covering air quality, noise, sustainability, transport, water and waste management, and social and economic impacts. Key activities also include liaison with government, stakeholders, and communities, providing specialist technical advice, preparing planning and environmental documentation for regulatory authorities and undertaking environmental impact studies.
The project had a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Synergy to sell its electricity and renewable energy certificates to Synergy.
The project received approvals from Shire of Manjimup in April 2014.
In June 2014, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) recommended the five-year extension for the construction work to begin.
In July 2014, EPA has approved a request by WAB to extend the construction deadline until March 2019.
The in-house division of Westgen Pty Ltd will be responsible for construction work.
WAB is currently in negotiations with Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and Synergy to go ahead with the development.
