Verdant Power (VP), US-based Company, is planning to undertake the Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy facilities in East River, New York, the US.
The project involves the construction of facilities for 10MW tidal power generation capacity. It includes the construction of substations, the installation of 200 turbines and the laying of transmission lines.
The project will be developed in three phases.
The phase one of the project involves site analysis, prototype development of the turbine, demonstrating and testing and also the preliminary permitting.
The phase two of the project involves designing and deploying of the next generation turbines and installing of the six turbines with capacity of 175kW and also the final permission for the full operation of the project.
The phase three of the project involves design and deployment of the next generation turbines with the capacity of up-to 10MW.
In Jan 2011, the Company has filed application for the license of the project to the Energy Regulatory Commission. If granted, this license would allow building 1MW plant on the East Channel of the East River.
In 2012, separate license will be applied for the 2-4MW West channel of the east river. For the rest capacity separate application will be filed after receiving approval for first two plants.
On May 3, 2011, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) released an environmental assessment report of the project and on January 23, 2012, FERC issued a pilot commercial license for the RITE Project.
In August 2013, the project granted a license from the FERC.

In February 2016, the research team will conduct an analysis of individual fish movements using previously unanalyzed sonar data collected at Verdant Power’s Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy Project, located in the East River near Manhattan.
This study will provide the industry with a complete analysis of fish interaction data at a full-size turbine that developers and regulators can use to estimate the likelihood of encounter and injury at tidal and riverine sites.
The tools refined in this study will be widely applicable to other sites and conditions, and the results from this study will be used to refine estimates of potential effects, design mitigation to minimize impacts, and develop monitoring protocol.
In March 2017, phase one of the project is completed.
Verdant is planning to deploy TriFrame equipped fifth generation KHPS turbines at Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy Project.
Planning activities are underway.
