Valley Metro Rail Inc (VMRI or METRO) is planning to undertake the light rail extension in Maricopa County, Arizona, the US.
The project involves the construction of new 17.7km light rail transit system starting from Interstate-10 to 79th Avenue park-and-ride.
The project will be developed in two phases. The first phase includes the construction of rail line of 2.2km from I-10 to state capitol and the second phase includes the construction of rail line of 15.5km from state capitol to 79th Avenue park-and-ride.
The project will include the construction of new rail way line and stations, the laying of tracks and the installation of signaling units, electric lines and related facilities.
VMRI has undertaken related feasibility studies to finalize the preferred route for proposed Phoenix West section.
In July 2012, VMRI received regional approval from the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) on the route and transit mode for the Phoenix West extension.
