Virginia Mason Hospital & Medical Center (VMH) plans to undertake the expansion of Virginia Mason Medical Center First Hill Campus project at the southeast block of the medical center in Seattle, Washington, the US.
The project involves the expansion of First Hill Campus with an addition of 157,935m2 facilities. The project includes the demolition of old buildings and erecting new ones in the densely-populated neighborhood.
In addition to new buildings, the plan also includes the construction of five new sky bridges and seven new underground tunnels for additional connections between parts of the hospital's six-block campus. There would be new underground parking facilities and additional driveways.
In January 2012, Virginia Mason Medical Center has applied to the city of Seattle to increase the area of its First Hill campus by 130% while also expanding its boundary. However, with meetings scheduled through at least November 2012, still greater engagement in the planning process is needed.
Virginia Mason Medical Center is creating a new Major Institution Master Plan (MIMP) for its First Hill campus. A MIMP is a comprehensive plan, stipulated by the City of Seattle's Land Use Code, which serves to guide campus developments over many years, in this case approximately a 20- to 30-year period.
Virginia Mason is engaging in a collaborative process with its Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) and City departments to create three main components: MIMP, Transportation Management Plan, and Environmental Impact Statement to address elements including height, open space, parking and traffic impacts, landscaping and density.
Weinstein A|U, MAKERS architecture & urban design LLP, SRG Partnership Inc., and URS Projects Pty Limited were appointed as master planners on the project.
On July 19, 2012, the EIS has been prepared for Virginia Mason Medical Center’s MIMP, which is a conceptual planning document and was issued.
On December 16, 2013, the MIMP was approved by the Seattle City Council.
In April 2016, the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods is seeking advises from community members of First Hill to ensure that the planned projects are in accordance with its Master Plan.
Planning activities are underway.
