The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is planning to undertake the construction of Vishwamitri Riverfront Development project in Gujarat, India.
The project involves the relocation of slums; cleaning up the riverfront which will be developed in three phases over a 17km stretch of total 70km Long River of which about 25km stretch passes through the city.
The first phase of the project involves the relocation of about 4,500 slum dwellers into houses. The second phase involves the implementation of the flood control management project. The third phase involves the implementation of the riverfront development.
The project also includes the construction of a jogging park, a food court, a mini sports stadium, organized parking facilities, malls, a crocodile park, boating and related facilities.
In January 2013, VMC initiated the process of securing funds.
In November 2014, VMC invited expression of interest (EOI) from consultants for conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA) and related clearance for the project with the bids submission deadline as December 18, 2014.
In October 2015, the Gujarat Government approved the project proposal of VMC to set up a company for implementation of the project. VMC appointed HCP Design and Project Management Pvt. Ltd as a consultant to undertake a feasibility study for the development.
On May 27, 2016, Society for Clean Environment (Socleen is listed under Environment Pollution Control Services) submitted a detailed petition on the project to VMC and formed an expert group to examine the project proposal. The group prepared a report that was recently submitted to the VMC during a discussion on the project.
In July 2016, State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) and National Green Tribunal (NGT), Pune inspected the proposed area along the Vishwamitri river.
In August 2016, VMC withdrew the Environmental assessment application as it was not in proper order.EA approvals will be submitted once a final DPR is prepared.
VMC is in the process of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
