The Victoria Airport Authority (VAA) is planning to undertake the runway extension project in British Columbia, Canada.
The project involves the extension of 457m runway 09/27. It will include the extension of 183m to west (runway 09) and another 274m to east (runway 27), creating an 2.6km straightaway, extension of parallel taxiway (taxi echo) to the east and west, overlay of runway 09/27, installation of lighting system at each end (east and west), the construction of parking space and access roads, and the installation of controlling, monitoring and safety systems.
Extension of taxiway (taxi echo) to west and east is included in the short-term plan of the project. The runway 09/27 extension of 183m to west and 274m to the east is included in the long-term and ultimate term plan of the project.
VAA appointed Tetra Tech EBA, as a design consultant for the project.
On June 01, 2009, funding proposal was present to Federal and Provincial Ministers.
VAA completed the final design of the expansion in the fourth quarter of 2010 and is in contact with provincial and federal governments regarding the funding of the project. As there was no response regarding funding, VAA decided to fund of its own.
The construction of full parallel taxiway E (east and west) to runway 09/27 is completed. The runway 09/27 extension of the west is listed in the airport’s master plan to 2017, but no start date has been issued.
Planning activities are underway and the entire expansion of the runway is expected to complete by 2031.
