Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) is planning to undertake the construction of Rukungiri-Kihihi-Ishasha/Kanungu Road Upgrade project in Uganda.
The project involves the construction of a 79km, 10m wide road segment and is being developed in two phases.
The first phase includes the construction of 52km stretch between Rukungiri to Ishasha and the second phase includes the construction of 27km stretch linking Kihihi to Kanungu, both linking to the paved section of Ntungamo-Rukungiri road, a regional and international link to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
It also includes the construction of carriageways, medians, culverts, bridges, and the installation of side rails, traffic signals and information boards.
It includes the upgrade of the existing 35km gravel road from Rukungiri to Nyakashure followed by a major realignment from the existing alignment between Nyakashure (36km+800) and Ishasha (51km+540).
The road upgrade is proposed to have 7m wide carriageway (two lanes each 3.5m wide) and paved shoulders on either sides of the road each 1.5m in the rural area and 2m wide in trading centers.
It is a part of Road Sector Support Project V for which African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has approved an overall loan of US$109 million for the funding of the project.
In January 2015, Prequalification evaluation report was submitted to AfDB for no objection.
In May 2016, UNRA is in the process of the acquiring land for the project. The team is holding rigorous meetings with local residents who will be affected by the project.
On October 21, 2016, Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) issued a tender to appoint a contractor to undertake road upgrade works with last submission date as December 13, 2016.
In March 2017, Kabale High Court issued an injunction blocking anticipated construction works by barring UNRA, and its agents and employees from executing a contract with Zhongmei Engineering Group, the contractor shortlisted by the tender issued in October 2016.
In April 2017, URNA has rejected bids from seven companies as they are among the companies parliament warned UNRA not to work with.
Planning activities are underway.
