The project involves the construction of a desalination plant with an initial capacity of 200 million liters per day (MLD) which would be expanded to 400MLD in future.
The project will include the construction of a distillation unit, a vapor compression unit, a membrane processes unit, a pumping station, a sedimentation tank, a water storage facility, a biochemical reaction tank, intake and outlet pipelines and an air blower room, and the installation of steam generators.
On July 4, 2012, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the project.
On September 2, 2013, Larsen & Tubro ECC Ltd (L&T ECC) was appointed as general contractor for the project.
The construction works are underway and nearing completion.
