Tees Valley Unlimited (TVU) is undertaking the construction of a rail project in County Durham, the UK.
The project involves the upgrade of Tees Valley Line, sections of Esk Valley Line and Durham Coast Line, which will be developed in two phases.
The first phase includes the upgrade of Darlington to Saltburn rail corridor, Tees Valley Line, new platforms at Darlington station and Middlesbrough, new stations at Wilton and James Cook University Hospital, relocation of Tees-side Airport station and improvements of existing stations at Eaglescliffe, Thornaby, Hartlepool and Redcar Central.
The second phase includes the improvements to the Esk Valley Line between Nunthorpe and Middlesbrough, and on the Durham Coast Line between Middlesbrough and Hartlepool. It includes the construction of new stations at Morton Palms, Middlehaven, The Ings and Nunthorpe Parkway and 98,500m2 of commercial space, and 1,500 new homes.
The project is backed by all the local authorities through whom the system would run. These include Hartlepool, Middleborough, Redcar & Cleveland, Stockton-On-Tees and Darlington. It is also being supported by the Department of Transport (DfT).
Network Rail has been appointed as lead consultant for the project.
In September 2008, the project received approval from the Interim Regional Transport Board.
In July 2009, the project was financed by DfT via Regional Funding Allocation process. TVU received US$7 million funding from DfT for the project.
Esh Developments has been appointed as construction contractor, Hardscape as supply contractor and Arup (Arts and Culture Division) as landscape architect.
In February 2016, construction works on the first phase completed.
Planning works on the second phase are underway.
