Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) is planning to undertake the upgrade of the port in Mtwara, Tanzania.
The project involves the upgrade of the port to increase the handling capacity to 28 million tonnes of traffic annually. The project will include the construction of four new berths, storage units, loading and unloading facilities, administrative facility and related infrastructure facilities.
TPA acquired an additional 263ha of land for the development of the project.
In November 2008, TPA entered an agreement with Japanese government for conducting the preliminary survey for the project.
In 2014, TPA invited tenders for construction of four berths with associated facilities under Design, Build and Financing model with submission deadline as June 25, 2014. However the submission deadline was extended twice to October 15, 2014, from earlier submission deadlines of August 28, 2014 and October 1, 2014.
On November 04, 2014, the tender was cancelled.
In January 2015, TPA invited expressions of interest (EOIs) from Hydraulic/Engineering firms to provide consultancy services for conducting Hydraulic Modeling with February 20, 2015, as the submission deadline.
In January 8, 2016, the ministry is in talks with the World Bank for the possibility of providing the funds for Mtwara port.
On March 14, 2017, the ground breaking ceremony was held.
The Minister for Works, Transport and Communications, is in process of securing funds for the Mtwara Port.
TPA is also in the process of finding a consultant to conduct the feasibility study.
