Total S.A. (Total) is undertaking the upgrade of the Donges refinery in France.
The project involves the modernization of the refinery. It includes the construction of a new desulfurization unit, a steam methane reformer (SMR), production units, administrative offices, warehouses, storage facilities, access roads and parking facilities, the rerouting of an existing rail line and the installation of related facilities.
It also includes the construction of two railway lines in Donges which links North variant (crossing the railway line between the town of Donges and Northern RD100) and South variant (Industrial area of Jouy to RD 100).
The new desulfurization unit will be used to produce low-sulfur fuels that meet the evolutions of E.U specifications. SMR unit will be used to produce hydrogen needed for the desulfurization unit. The SMR will be built by a contractor under a long-term hydrogen supply contract with the refinery.
On October 13, 2015, Total S.A awarded a contract to Axens for the engineering design of the new vacuum gas oil (VGO) desulfurization unit, The unit is designed to process around 40,000 BPD (barrels per day) and will allow Total producing low sulfur fuels meeting the evolution of EU specifications.
In September 2016, the feasibility study activities for the desulfurization unit were completed.
In August 2017, Amec Foster Wheeler PLC has been awarded front-end engineering design for a project to boost production of cleaner fuels. scope of work will include providing FEED studies for a vacuum gas oil hydrotreater (VGO HDS) unit and sour-water stripping unit, as well as for modifications to existing units and interconnections at the refinery.
The project involves the upgrade of Total's Donges Refinery in France.
