Transport for New South Wales (TNSW), through its executing agency Railcorp, is undertaking the Northern Sydney Freight Corridor (NSFC) project in New South Wales, Australia.
The project involves the construction of a Northern Sydney Freight Corridor. The project is planned to be developed in stages.
The project will be jointly funded by Australian and NSW governments.
Stage I of the project includes the construction of North Strathfield rail underpass, the Epping to Thornleigh Third Track and the Gosford Passing Loops.
North Strathfield Rail Underpass includes the construction of a new 2.4km track, upgrade of 850m of existing track and construction of other related facilities.
The Gosford Passing Loops includes the construction of two new passing loops on both sides of the existing rail line between Gosford and Narara Stations, the construction of six new rail under bridges over Brady’s Gully, Wingello Creek and Wyoming Creek to accommodate the new tracks and construction of other infrastructural facilities.
Epping to Thornleigh Third Track includes the construction of 6km of new and upgraded track within the rail corridor between Epping and Thornleigh stations.
Stage IIA of the project includes the construction of 2.4km Lower Main North Quadruplication Lite, 3.6km Rhodes to West Rhyde Section Quadruplication, 13km Berowra to Hawkesbury River Section Triplication, redevelopment of five stations, construction of six complex bridges and overbridges and 6.3km tunnel.
Geodata Engineering S.p.A has been appointed as the study consultant for the Stage IIA of the project. The scope includes design for the three sections including all civil works (tunnel, bridges, deflection wall, drainage, etc.), architecture, landscape and urban design, permanent way, MEP, HV-LV electrical works, OHW, signaling and train control, Geo-technical, hydrological investigations, existing structural condition survey, identify and investigate environmental risks and mitigation measures.
The scopes of Stage III are yet to be revealed.
In October 2012, TNSW received planning consent on the project.
Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM), and its sub-consultants Mott MacDonald (tunneling) were appointed as design contractors; HBO+EMTB as the architect, landscaping and urban design contractor; and Douglus Partners as the geo-technical consultant; and Leighton Contractors was appointed as ability support consultant.
Matt Shuter Associates, Morris Goding, Rose Atkins Rimmer, Golder and Associates, Worley Parsons, Oviso Rail to provide the signal design works; Aquenta Consulting to provide independent estimating services; and Procure Group Ptd Ltd. was appointed as a Probity Advisor and SMEC Australia as the study consultant for the project.
In December 2012, Macmahon Holdings Ltd and Bouygues Travaux Publics Australia were appointed as contractors for North Strathfield rail underpass.
In February 2013, Downer EDI was awarded the US$93 million design-build contract for the Gosford Passing Loops of the project.
In March 2013, the construction works on the North Strathfield Rail Underpass and The Gosford Passing Loops of the project commenced and Leighton Abigroup Consortium was appointed as design-build contract for the Epping to Thornleigh Third Track.
The Epping to Thornleigh Third Track project is expected to secure US$259 million from Australian Government and US$84 million from the New South Wales government.
In November 2013, construction works commenced on Epping to Thornleigh Third Track.
In April 2015, construction works on Gosford Passing Loops of stage I completed.
In June 2015, construction works on North Strathfield underpass completed and was commissioned.
In the first quarter of 2016, US$19 million was allocated in the federal budget to the project by the Government of Australia, which is part of total US$527 million fund allocated in 2013.
In June 2016, construction activities on Epping to Thornleigh Third Track were completed.
Business case development activities are underway on stage II. The entire project is anticipated for completion by 2028.
