Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd (THDC) is undertaking the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) project in Uttarakhand, India.

The project involves the construction of a 1,000MW (4 X 250MW) pumped storage plant that will pump up water using the off-peak surplus energy from the Koteshwar dam to the Tehri dam.

The project will include the construction of underground powerhouse cavern, bus bar ducts and shafts, penstock assembly chamber, penstocks, upstream and downstream surge shafts, tailrace tunnels, TRT outlet structure, an underground machine hall and appurtenant works.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the project was prepared by EDF Group and Coyne- Et- Bellier (COB).

In July 2006, the company has obtained approvals from concern authorities for the development of the project.

COB, in association with Tractebel Engineers and Constructors Pvt. Ltd. (TECPL) in a joint venture with OJSC Engineering Centre UES, had prepared the tender documents for EPC contract for the project.

On June 23, 2011, the consortium of Alstom Hydro France and Hindustan Construction Company Ltd was awarded a US$407 million EPC contract for the project in which the share of HCC is US$155 million. Alstom will supply four 250MW variable speed turbine & generator units and other equipment including main inlet valves, control, and protection systems for the project.

On July 27, 2011, construction activities were commenced.

In May 2013, Alstom selected GE Power Conversion to provide its variable-speed drive technology for the project.

Construction activities are underway and scheduled for completion in May 2018.


The project involves the construction of 1,000MW (4X250MW) pumped storage plant (PSP) in Uttarakhand, India.
