Toronto City Council (TCC) is undertaking the sewage outfall tunnel at Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant in Ontario, Canada.

The project involves the construction of a 3.5km sewage outfall tunnel with 7m internal diameter conveying up to 3,923 million litres per day (MLD). It includes the construction of effluent pumping station, chlorination/de-chlorination system, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system for the treated plant effluent, 85m deep onshore shaft with an outer diameter of 14m, 1,000m long diffuser with 50 risers, 50m deep risers and the installation of safety and security systems.

In 2008, TCC received approvals from the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.

In October 2015, Hatch Mott MacDonald was appointed to undertake the detailed design and construction management services for the project. CH2M and Baird has been appointed as design consultants.

In February 2017, 30% of the design works completed.

Tender for the construction contract is expected to be issued in the first quarter of 2018 and the construction work is scheduled to commence by the third quarter of 2018 and to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2023.

Scope

1. Construction of an effluent pumping station

2. Construction of a chlorination/de-chlorination system

4. Construction of a 85m deep onshore shaft with an outer diameter of 14m

3. Construction of a 1,000m long diffuser with 50 risers

4. Construction of a 50m deep risers
