Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) on-behalf of the State Government is planning to undertake the construction of a thermal power plant in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, India.
The project involves the construction of a 4,000MW thermal power plant on 1,214ha of land. It includes the construction of a substation, access roads and related infrastructure, the installation of generators and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.
As of September 2015, the state government has identified land for the project and is awaiting for necessary approvals.
In November 2015, Tangedco has floated bids for appointing a consultant to prepare the feasibility and detailed project report (DPR).
Development Consultants Private Ltd (DCPL) has been appointed as the consultant to prepare the feasibility and DPR.
In April 2016, Kondunallanpatti, S Tharaikudi, Naripaiyur, Kannirajapuram village, Valinokkam and Siraikulam villages were shortlisted for the development of the project.
In August 2016, TANGEDCO selected S Tharaikudi, Kannirajapuram village, and Naripaiyur sites.
In October 2016, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) denied clearance to build a 4,000 MW power plant in Kadaladi Taluk and the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the MoEF rejected all the sites that were shortlisted to build the project.
Feasibility study activities are underway and simultaneously, TANGEDCO is in the process of selecting a suitable site for the project development.
