Tanzania Electric Supply Company Ltd (TANESCO) owned by the government of Tanzania is planning to build a multi-purpose dam and hydroelectric power plant in Ruvuma Region, Tanzania.

The project involves the construction of a multipurpose dam with a capacity of six billion m3 and 300MW hydroelectric power plant. It includes the construction of a powerhouse, a substation and diversion tunnels, the installation of turbines, generators and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.

In August 2016, TANESCO received a grant of a US$2.8 million for the project feasibility study and outline design and it will take 22 months to complete.

The African Water Facility/ African Development Bank funded US$2.2 million, US$0.335 million from the Climate Resilient Infrastructure Development Facility and US$0.223 million from the Government of Tanzanian for the feasibility study.

Feasibility studies are underway and are scheduled to be completed in 2018.
