State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is planning to build a mixed-use facility in Bangkok, Thailand.
The project involves the construction of a mixed-use facility on 96ha of land.
It includes the construction of a National Train Museum, commercial space, access roads, parks, parking and related facilities.
In September 2014, SRT was in the process of issuing terms of reference for the project’s development. Under the terms, SRT intends to lease the land on a 30-year basis, to be extended for another 30 years.
On March 17, 2015, SRT has received approvals from the State Enterprise Policy Committee. However, the plans have been revived due to the opposition from the local public and a proposal is looking forward to converting the site into 80% greenery and 20% commercial buildings.
In 2016, SRT planned to lease the Makkasan plot to the Finance Ministry for 99 years for commercial development in return for clearing a 61-billion-baht debt.
However, it was suspended after legal concerns were raised over whether it can be developed for purposes other than those related to the rail system.
