Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation (SRGF) is planning to undertake the construction of a new Guggenheim museum in Helsinki, Finland.
The project involves the construction of a 13,000m2 museum. It includes the construction of an exhibition building, an administrative building, a concert hall, visitor’s space, parking and related facilities, and the installation of safety and security systems.
In October 2011, SRGF conducted a feasibility study.
In April 2012, the Helsinki City Council (HCC) rejected the proposal from SRGF.
In May 2013, SRGF appointed Miltton Group as study consultant.
In September 2013, SRGF submitted a revised proposal.
In October 2013, SRGF held public consultations.
On June 4, 2014, SRGF along with HCC and Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA) held architectural competition managed by Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC) to appoint an architect.
The design competition will be conducted in two stages. The submission for stage one of the competition is due on September 10, 2014.
In December 2014, SRGF selected six final designs for the project. The six selected firms are AGPS Architecture Ltd.; Asif Khan Ltd.; Fake Industries Architectural Agonism; Haas Cook Zemmrich STUDIO2050; Moreau Kusunoki Architect; and SMAR Architecture Studio.
Public exhibition held from April 25 to May 16, 2015, to select the winner from the six finalists.
On June 23, 2015, Moreau Kusunoki Architect was selected as architect.
The SRGF is in the process of seeking funds. Finnair, an air carrier company teamed up with other travel industry companies, have pledged to invest US$1.1 million in the project.
The project is facing funding issues as the government denied to fund the project.
On December 1, 2016, the HCC rejected the project plans.
