Sunshine Oilsands Ltd. (SOL) is undertaking the Oilsands Development project in West Ells, Alberta, Canada.
The project involves the development of West Ells Oilsands with a production of 10,000 barrels per day (BPD) and it is to grow gradually to about 100,000BPD by 2024.
The project will be developed in two phases. The first phase includes the development of West Ells Oilsands with a production of 5,000BPD, eight horizontal well pairs and supporting injection and handling facilities.
Second phase includes the development of West Ells Oilsands with a production of 5,000BPD, two well pairs and supporting facilities.
The project will include the drilling of wells, the installation of steam generation facilities, pipelines and crude oil storage facilities. The development will take place using the Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) enhance oil recover method.
ProTrace Engineering was appointed as a Engineering Design Consultant for the first phase of the project. AMEC was appointed as the engineering consultant.
On January 26, 2012, SOL received The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) grants approval and in June 2012, the construction works on the project commenced.
The project has been placed on hold from August 2013 and on-site civil earthworks were recommenced on August 13, 2014. Formal construction was recommenced on October 15, 2014.
In September 2015, construction works on the first phase was completed and first production started in December 2015.
On November 25, 2016, all Phase I wells are in full production at West Ells project.
Regulatory approvals for the second phase were received.
On March 19, 2017, SOL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Corporation and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation (CPECC) for the West Ells Phase II project expansion.
The project involves the development of Oilsands with a production of 10,000 barrels per day West Ells Oilsands in Alberta, Canada.
The US$401 million project includes the following:
1. Drilling of wells
2. Installation of steam generation facilities
3. Installation of pipelines
4. Installation of crude oil storage facilities
