A joint venture of Alara Resources, a wholly owned subsidiary Saudi Investments Pty Limited (SIPL) and Bayan Mining LLC (Bayan) are undertaking the Khnaiguiyah Zinc Copper Development project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The project involves the development of Copper (Cu) and Zinc (Zn) deposits over an area of 380km2 producing 80-90 kilo tonnes per annum of zinc concentrate and 5.8 kilo tonnes per annum of copper concentrate.
It includes the construction of 2MTPA throughput process plant including crushers, grinding circuit, floatation circuits, thickeners and filtration units for copper and zinc, conveyors, modern integrated fiber optics based real time communication system and control room, weighbridge and laboratory.
It includes the construction of a diesel power plant with a capacity of 24MW, bores, pumping station, 15km pipeline and water storage facilities.
The project also includes the development of the K1, K2 and K3 Pits and construction of tailing and waste disposal and Co-disposal facility.
The exploratory drilling was conducted in four zones. In Zone 1, Hole K1DD12_221 intersecting from 24m to 30.8m with 6.8m has provided 6.02% Zn and 0.49% Cu.
In December 2010, Mining License issued with 30 year exclusive term and no mineral royalties payable.
In July 2012, the company received a draft of the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) for the project.
In April 30, 2013, the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) on the project completed and accepted. The feasibility study was conducted by Ausenco Services Pty Ltd, SRK Consulting, SMEC, CRU International Limited, Kiandra Engineering, Megabest Pty Ltd, George, Orr & Associates, BDO and Pinc Group Pty Ltd.
In the second quarter of 2013, the DFS for 2Mtpa completed.
In the fourth quarter of 2013, the company submitted 75% project finance application to the Saudi Investment.
Life of Mine (LOM) will be of 13 years at 2Mtpa throughput and potential production.
In the first quarter of 2014, SIPL increased the stake in the project making it to 60%.
In July 2015, SIPL made a joint venture framework agreement with Bayan.
In November 2015, the Saudi government suspended the mining operations at the project site as the project's environmental license got expired.
Project is facing delay due to the lack of mining license. Subject to the commencement of construction it is expected to take 24 months consisting of 18 months for Engineering, Procurement and Construction; 4 months for Commissioning including wet commissioning.
