The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is undertaking the L-8 Flow Equalization Basin project in Loxahatchee, about 20 miles west of West Palm Beach, Florida, the US.
The project involves the construction of a 16m-deep reservoir with a storage capacity of 55 million m3 of water on 384ha former rock mine.
The project includes the construction of a G-539 Pump Station, a new two-stage pumping facility with a maximum pumping capacity of 450cfs, a new boat ramp facility, G-538 Spillway, a new gated control structure with a maximum flow capacity of 3,000cfs, the cell modifications, an extension of the inflow-outflow canal connecting the FEB to the existing L-8 Canal and related facilities and the installation of a new access road bridge across the canal and safety systems.
On September 13, 2012, SFWMD awarded design-build contract to Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc. (Jacobs) and Archer-Western Contractors, Inc.
Carollo Engineers has been appointed as environmental consultant.
In June 2014, MWH was awarded the master services agreement contract by SFWMD. According to the agreement, MWH will provide construction management and engineering services for the state's ongoing Restoration Strategies Regional Water Quality Plan projects.
In July 2016, construction work was 87% complete.
Construction works are expected to complete in 2017.
