Secretaría de Energía (SE) a part of Ministerio de Planificación Federal is planning to develop the hydropower complex project in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina.
The project consists of the construction of a hydropower complex with the generating capacity of 1,740MW capacity along with two dams named Néstor Kirchner and Jorge Cepernic, and other related infrastructural facilities. The project also has the installation of 11 turbines, generators and related equipments, and the laying of transmission lines.
Néstor Kirchner dam will be 75.5m high, and the generating capacity of hydroplant is 1,140MW while the Jorge Cepernic dam will be 43.5m high, and the generating capacity of the power plant is 600MW.
An international tender was called in August, 2012 to develop this project. Five bidders comprising of 21 companies participated to the bidding process.
In August, 2013, a consortium formed by China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC), Electroingeniería S.A. and Hidrocuyo S.A has been awarded as the contractor for this project.
In July 2014, China Development Bank, in collaboration with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Limited (ICBC) and Bank of China Limited (BCL) completed a deal to finance the project.
In September 2014, Environmental Assessment started on the project.
In January 2015 China has deposited the first US$287.7 million tranches of funding for the massive US$4.71 billion project.
In February 2015, the Financial deal has been completed.
MWH Global is appointed as Design Consultant on the project.
Construction work has been started. Construction work will take five years to get complete.
The Kirchner-Cepernic Hydropower Complex project involves the construction of two dams with the total generation capacity of 1,740MW in Santa Cruz, Argentina.
