Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK-CEN) is undertaking the MYRRHA Fast Spectrum Nuclear Reacto in Mol, Belgium.
The project involves the construction of a fast spectrum nuclear reactor, conceived as an acceleration driven system (ADS) and other related infrastructure like construction of control room, and the installation of a proton accelerator of 600MeV, a spallation target and a multiplying core with MOX fuel, cooled by liquid lead-bismuth (Pb-Bi) and safety measures.
In October 2013, the study contract was awarded to the consortium of Ansaldo Nucleare and Empresarios Agrupados led by Areva.
The project will receive a financial grant of US$532 million from the Government of Belgium over a period of 10 years.
The first MYRRHA components are expected to be procured by 2017. Construction is expected to commence in 2022 for foreseen operations in 2023.
Demonstration of feasibility study and analyzing reliability of the project is in progress.
SCK-CEN and the Belgian Government is looking for investors for FEED phase with the aim to launch the
construction of the first part of the accelerator MYRRHA (100 MeV) to the horizon.
