Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) is planning to undertake the construction of the pellet plant project in Jharkhand, India.
The project involves the construction of a pellet plant with a capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). It will include the construction of a distribution unit, storage facility, heat treatment facility, and a warehouse.
The project includes the construction of a material receiving/sieving unit, drying unit, cooling/sieving unit and packing unit, the installation of equipments and safety systems.
Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS), the R&D unit of SAIL and Mecon Ltd has been appointed as lead consultants.
On July 5, 2008, SAIL issued expression of interests (EoI) for the companies to compete for the Turnkey Contract. On September 26, 2008, the EoI was reissued as the split package.
The companies including Metso, Bateman, Outotec, FL Smidth, Humboldt Wedag, Downer EDI Mining, MCC’s design institutes, Metchem, Hatch has expressed their interest for split package.
In May 2010, SAIL has issued tenders for the project with May 22, 2010, as the submission deadline. However the project was later kept on hold due to environmental issues.
In November 2011, SAIL has re-issued the tender for the project with December 20, 2011 as the submission deadline.
In February 2012, a consortium formed by Larsen & Toubro - Metallurgical & Material Handling IC, Metso Corporation and Outotec GmbH was selected as the most preferred bidders and the letter of intent (LoI) was issued to the consortium.
The tender was cancelled and new tenders for the project will be issued. The Letter of Award (LoA) is expected to be issued once the final approvals on the project are obtained.
In January 2014, the SAIL received forest clearances for the further development of the project.
Planning activities are underway.
The project involves the construction of 4MTPA capacity pellet plant in Gua, Pashchimi Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, India.
