RioZim Ltd (RioZim) and Rio Tinto (RT) are planning to undertake the Sengwa Thermal Power Plant project in Gokwe region, Midlands Province, Zimbabwe.
The project involves the construction of a coal-fired power plant with a generation capacity of 2,400MW. It is planned to implement in phases with a generation capacity of 1,200MW in the first phase.
The project will include the construction of a powerhouse, coal washing unit, water transmission pipeline, raw water storage tanks and switch yard for power evacuation, the installation of turbines and steam boilers, and the laying of transmission lines.
The project will use coal from Sengwa Colliery field, which has estimated coal reserves of 1,300 million tonnes.
In March 2014, CHINA Power Investment Corporation (CPIC) has expressed interest to undertake the development of the project.
In October 2014, Government has awarded a license to build the proposed mega thermal power plant project.
In July 2015, South African power utility company Eskom has expressed interest to undertake the development of the project. Eskom is in negotiations with the Sengwa Thermal Power for undertaking the project.
As of June 2017, RioZim in talks with an investor for the project.
