Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) and Government of Cameroon (GOC) are planning to undertake the Songmbengue Hydroelectric Dam project in Sanaga-Maritime region, Cameroon.

The project involves the construction of a 1,000MW capacity dam and a high voltage power line between Songmbengue and Kribi.

The project will include the construction of the powerhouse, substation, installation of turbines, generators, lining of transmission and distribution lines of 400 KV and construction of other related facilities.

In 2008, Poyry associated with EDF (France) and RSWI (Quebec) was appointed for all environmental studies: hydrology, topographic surveys, GIS and satellite imagery, water quality, measures of the diatoms as water quality indicators, fauna, flora and forests, biomass and GHG, compensation of CO2 emissions through the creation of a carbon sink.

Aecom has appointed for the study on the transmission and distribution system of the project and Geofor appointed to undertake the geo-technical surveys.

In February 2016, preliminary studies on the project were commenced.

In July 2016, the investors from Hong Kong Resources Development Group Ltd showed interest for the construction of the project.

Preliminary study works are underway.
