The Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is undertaking the upgrade of a road section in New South Wales, Australia.
The project involves the duplication of a 3.8km section of Tourle Street and Cormorant Road between Industrial Drive, Mayfield West and Egret Street, Kooragang to provide two lanes in each direction.
It includes the construction of a new two-lane bridge on the western side of the existing bridge, a 2.5m emergency stopping lane along Cormorant Road, service roads, intersections, dividers and related infrastructure, and the installation of safety and signaling systems.
James Mather Delaney Design Pty Ltd has been appointed as a landscape architect.
In August 2013, the Australian and New South Wales governments committed to provide US$46 million each to fund the project.
RMS held community consultations to discuss the review of environmental factors in September 2014.
On October 10, 2014, RMS awarded a contract to GHD Pty Ltd to prepare planning documents and undertake detailed design work.
In December 2014, an environmental review factor was completed. Detailed design work has been completed.
On September 18, 2015, early construction works which include road embankments and an underground barrier to prevent movement of old steel work commenced on the project.
On September 29, 2015, the tender was issued to the pre-qualified bidders for the construction of enabling works of the project.
In March 2016, a joint venture of WBHO Infrastructure and McIlwain Civil Engineering awarded a construction contract for the project.
In April 2016, site preparatory works commenced.
In May 2016, construction activities commenced.
In May 2017, Federal Government announced US$38 million funding in equity for the project over next 10 years. Out of which US$7.3 million to be provided for planning and preparatory work in 2017-18.
The government plans to establish a government-owned company with strong private sector expertise in FY2017/18 to manage the development process.
Construction activities are slated for completion by the fourth quarter of 2018.
