Rungta Mines Ltd (RML) is planning to expand the Sundargarh steel plant in Odisha, India.
The project involves the expansion of a steel plant on 155ha of land. It includes the expansion of a sponge iron steel plant from 0.27 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 0.6MTPA, the construction a steel plant with capacity of 0.2TPA, a captive power plant with a capacity of 25MW, a production unit, a billets production unit, a warehouse and other related facilities, and the installation of safety systems.
In September 2014, RML acquired 122ha of land.
In August 2015, RML submitted an application to Ministry of Environment and Forests to seek an extension of the environmental clearance granted.
On November 15, 2016, RML submitted a request for amendment to terms of reference for expansion of the plant from 0.6MTPA to 0.7MTPA.
On July 19, 2017, a public hearing was held on environment impact over the project and received a majority of votes in favor.
