Zambian Road Development Agency (RDA) is planning to undertake the construction of a road project in Zambia.
The project involves the construction of a 614.71km road from Serenje to Nakonde in three sections.
The first section involves the renovation of 238.89km road from Serenje to Mpika, the second section involves the renovation of a 165.65km road from Mpika to Chinsali and the third section involves the renovation of a 210.17km road from Chinsali to Nakonde Border Post nad the installation of safety and security systems.
Tripartite Project Preparation and Implementation Unit (PPIU) has been established to fast track the preparation of regional infrastructure projects for financing and to ensure better cooperation between the various project preparation facilities. The operations of the PPIU are currently supported by TradeMark South Africa (TMSA).
In May 2011, project received US$6 million funding from European Development Fund for techno studies, detailed engineering designs and preparation of tender documents.
In July 2012, Consultant GAUFF Engineering, Germany was appointed to provide detail design and preparation of tender documents for the Serenje to Mpika section; TYPSA Group of Spain to provide detail design and preparation of tender documents for the Mpika to Chinsali section; and Grontmij A/S of Denmark to provide detail design and preparation of tender documents for the Chinsali to Nakonde Border Post section.
Government of the Republic of Zambia will provide funding through annual budget for the development of the project.
The African Development Bank(AfDB) will finance US$193 million Bank loan and a US$50million loan from Africa Growing Together Fund (AGTF) will be provided for construction of the Chinsali-Nakonde the project.
The feasibility, preliminary design, engineering design and environmental and social economic impact assessment studies on the project have been completed.
Fund raising activities are underway.

2. Renovation of 165.65km Mpika-Chinsali road section
