The Road Development Authority, Sri Lanka (RDA) is planning to undertake the Ruwanpura Expressway connecting Pelmadulla via Ratnapura from the Kahathuduwa Interchange in Sri Lanka.
The project involves the construction of a 72km expressway. It will pass through Horana, Gelanigama, Handapangoda, Ingiriya, Munasinhapura, Kiriella, Otuwagala, Eheliyagoda, Kithulpe, Dogampe, Kosgoda, Kuruwita and Pelmadulla via Ratnapura. The project will be executed in three stages.
The project will include the construction of carriageways, service roads, over bridges, a new pavement, underpasses, a pedestrian way, supporting walls, culverts, and dividers, the installation of traffic signals, safety and security systems.
In July 2014, Feasibility studies completed and Minister of Ports and Highways has granted approval for the construction of the expressway.
In November 2014, the Cabinet has approved the awarding of the contract for providing consultancy services to carry out the feasibility studies and environmental impact assessment for the proposed project.
In May 2015, project was put on hold.
As of June 2016, the survey work for the acquisition of land is underway.
As ff September 2016, feasibility study activities are in final stages, along with, topographic survey and preliminary design work underway.
On February 20, 2017, RDA identified China National Technical Import and Export Corporation (CNTIC) as a Contractor for 26.3 km development from Kahathuduwa to Ingiriya under Section 1.
Final study activities are underway.
