Summary

A group of 11 companies comprising Idemitsu Kosan Co. (IDKOY), Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. (JAPEX), Mitsubishi Materials (MM), Inpex Corporation (INPEX), Sumitomo Corporation (Sumitomo), Geothermal Energy Research & Development Co. Ltd (GERD), Japan Metals & Chemicals Co. Ltd (JMC), Mitsui Oil Exploration Co. Ltd (MOECO), Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co. Inc. (MGC), Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) and Mitsubishi Corporation Power Ltd (MCP) are planning to construct a geothermal power plant in Fukushima, Japan.

The project involves the construction of a 270MW geothermal power plant. It includes construction of powerhouse, substation and access roads, the installation of turbines, generators and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.

In 2013, surface study to propose hot spring monitoring (e.g. survey for hot spring sources, and geochemical analysis of fluids) was completed.

In 2015, surface study to estimate the underground structure (e.g. survey for hot spring monitoring and observation of micro-earthquakes) was completed.

Preparation for drilling took place from May 2016 to mid-June. The site is being prepared with the rig up planned in July 2016, and drilling is then to take place from September 2016 to February 2017.

In June 2016, drilling survey is currently being prepared and based on the result of drilling survey, the team will set up a plan for drilling development wells and present the plan to the local communities. Under the consent of the local communities, the team will decide to move forward with the feasibility study.

Study activities are underway. Construction works are expected to be completed in 2020.
