Posiva Oy (Posiva) is undertaking the construction of a spent nuclear fuel encapsulation plant and disposal facility, near the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in Eurajoki, Finland.
The project involves the construction of mine shafts, hoists, underground tunnels, treatment infrastructure, and a waste disposal facility, and the installation of waste carrying equipment, shielding equipment, and metering units.
The tunnels have been constructed to study and verify the solidity of the area's rock bed where the waste is to be housed for around 100,000 years before its level of radioactivity begins to dissipate.
VTT Research was appointed as a project consultant.
In December 2012, Posiva submitted its application for the construction license to the government which was granted in November 2015.
On November 25, 2016, The Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority’s (STUK) awarded planning approvals.
On November 30, 2016, Posiva signed a contract, worth $21 million with YIT Construction Limited. The deal covers includes the excavation of the repository's first central tunnels, the vehicle access tunnels, preparatory excavations and rock sealing works and excavation works for the canister receiving station.
In December 2016, Excavation works commenced and underway.
The facility is expected to be operational by 2024.
