PT Weda Bay Nickel (PTWBN), a joint venture between Strand Minerals Indonesia Pte Ltd (SMPL) and PT Antam (Persero) Tbk, plans to undertake the Weda Bay Nickel Smelter project in Indonesia.

The project involves the construction of a nickel processing plant with a capacity to produce 30,000 tonnes of Nickel. It also includes the construction of production units, warehouses, residue separation units, alloy stations, the installation of fire safety system, rotary kilns, and preheater units and associated infrastructure facilities like slurry cleaning unit, heat exchangers and material handling system.

In October 2007, the study contract and engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) contract was awarded to Technip.

Feasibility studies are underway and a development application is yet to be submitted. The production is expected to commence in 2020.

Scope

The Weda Bay Nickel Smelter project involves the construction of a 30,000 tonnes per annum nickel processing plant in Indonesia.
