Public Power Corporation, Greece (PPC) is undertaking the construction of a lignite-fired power plant in West Macedonia, Greece.
The project involves the construction of a 660MW (power) plus 140MW (heat) lignite-fired power plant.
It includes the construction of a powerhouse, a substation, a cooling tower and access roads, the installation of a steam electric unit comprising a steam generator, a steam turbine-generator, an anti-pollution system, auxiliary equipment and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.
KfW IPEX-Bank GmbH (IPEX) is acting as the lead arranger for securing funds for the project.
On April 20, 2010, PPC initiated an international open tender on engineering, procurement, transportation and installation mode with a submission deadline of June 28, 2011.
In May 2012, PPC received environmental permit.
On March 9, 2013, Terna S.A. (Terna) was appointed as the turnkey contractor. Under the terms, Terna appointed Hitachi Power Europe GmbH as supplier of steam generator and desulphurization system, HITACHI Ltd as supplier of steam turbine and Hamon Thermal Europe as supplier of ash electrostatic precipitators.
In March 2013, German Export Credit Agency Euler-Hermes granted preliminary approval of an insurance cover of US$900 million for the facility.
In December 2013, PPC received final insurance coverage and subsequently achieved financial closure.
PPC is waiting for construction permit from the ministry to carry out all the necessary legislative and institutional actions for the implementation of the project.
In September 2015, construction works on the project commenced.
In June 2016, foundation works are underway.
Construction works are underway and construction works are scheduled to be completed by 2021.
