PEL Power (PEL), a subsidiary of Patel Engineering Ltd, is planning to undertake the construction of a coal based thermal power plant in Marudam Pallam, Tamil Nadu, India.
The project involves the construction of a 1,050MW coal based power plant. The project will be developed in three units of 350MW each.
It includes the construction of cooling towers, coal-handling unit and ash handling unit, power house and substations, the installation of boilers, turbines, generators and heat recovery steam, and the laying of transmission lines.
Coal required for the plant will be sourced by sea from PT Equity Commodities, Indonesia. The project will be funded through 70% debt from banks/DFIs and 30% equity from promoters.
PEL has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with PTC India Ltd. for marketing 70% of net power generated through a long term PPA and balance power available will be sold through Power Exchange India Ltd.
In July 2009, bids have been invited by PEL for main plant package of the project. Fichtner India has been appointed as engineer to conduct the bidding process. In August 2009, project was delayed due to protest from local residents.
In April 2010, PEL acquired land for the development of the project and received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF).
